Before the chill sets in, Colorado is gifting us a stretch of beautiful days—perfect for soaking up the sun and giving your garden a little love. Whether you're a seasoned green thumb or simply want to keep your landscaping looking its best, now’s the ideal time to get outside and prep your plants, trees, and soil for the colder months ahead. A few thoughtful steps today will help ensure your garden wakes up healthy and vibrant come spring.
1. Mulch for Warmth & Protection
A good layer of mulch (about 2-4 inches) helps insulate plant roots, keeping them warm and protected from harsh temperature swings. Think of it as a cozy winter blanket for your garden beds!
2. Hydrate Before the Freeze
Colorado’s dry climate means plants still need water in the winter. Give your trees, shrubs, and perennials a deep watering before the ground freezes. And on warmer winter days, a little extra hydration can go a long way!
3. Trim & Prune—But Not Everything!
Prune dead or damaged branches from trees and shrubs, but leave ornamental grasses and some perennials standing—they add winter interest and provide shelter for beneficial insects.
4. Protect Your Trees from Wildlife
Deer and rabbits get hungry when food is scarce, and your young trees might look like an easy snack. Wrap trunks with tree guards or burlap to prevent damage.
5. Store Tools & Plan for Spring
Clean and store garden tools, hoses, and outdoor furniture. This is also a great time to dream about next season—flip through seed catalogs, make notes on what worked well this year, and start planning for those first signs of spring!
These golden days won’t last forever, but a little care now will set the stage for a thriving garden come spring. If you’ve got a go-to tip for prepping your landscape before the frost, I’d love to hear it! Let’s trade ideas while the sun’s still shining—no cocoa required (unless you’re already in cozy mode). 🌞🌿
