Colorado Fun Fact - Sandhill Cranes

Writer: Debi HaningDebi Haning
Did you know that Colorado is a prime spot for witnessing the spectacular migration of Sandhill Cranes? Each spring and fall, these majestic birds make a stop at the San Luis Valley, creating a breathtaking sight for nature enthusiasts.
Cranes are among the oldest living birds on the planet, with fossil records dating back 9 million years. During migration, they fly in V-formations or make long lines. They have an unforgettably loud trumpeting call that can be heard for miles. It is produced by a modified windpipe that has been likened to a French horn. In the grain fields of the San Luis Valley, the birds engage in an intriguing "dance" during which they jump up and down. The motion is believed to be a show of affection for their mates, and a show of aggression toward other birds that are getting too close.
During their migration, more than 20,000 Sandhill Cranes gather in the valley, performing their iconic, graceful dances and filling the air with their distinctive calls. The Monte Vista Crane Festival, which was held this weekend, celebrates this incredible natural phenomenon with guided tours, educational events, and opportunities to observe these magnificent birds up close.
Sandhill cranes, standing about four to five feet tall with wingspans of six to seven feet, and are a true testament to the beauty and wonder of wildlife.
So, if you're able, make plans this fall or next spring, so you don't miss the chance to witness this awe-inspiring spectacle!
