Did You Know? Denver Sparked the Tradition of Outdoor Christmas Lights.
The popular tradition of outdoor holiday lights traces its roots back to
Denver in 1914, thanks to David Dwight "D.D." Sturgeon, a local electrician.
The Story: Sturgeon wanted to lift the spirits of his ailing son. He painted
light bulbs red and green, strung them along electrical wire, and wrapped
them around a pine tree outside his son's window.
The Impact: His idea caught on, inspiring others to decorate their homes
with festive outdoor lights, giving rise to a cherished holiday tradition.
The Legacy: Sturgeon later founded the Sturgeon Electric Company, which
continues to operate today.
Denver’s connection to holiday lighting predates even Sturgeon’s display.
As early as 1907, merchants adorned 16th Street with red and green bulbs
in streetlights. Today, Denver's holiday lights have evolved into dazzling
displays featuring thousands of energy-efficient LED bulbs synchronized to
festive music, continuing a tradition that began right here in the Mile High
City.
